CSU Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED)
In 2005, the California Legislature authorized the California State University (CSU) to offer the Ed.D. “because of the urgent need for well prepared administrators to lead public school and community college reform efforts.” (Chapter 269, Statutes of 2005). In implementing this legislation, the CSU is committed to careful re-consideration of and to achieving excellence in every aspect of doctoral education, from candidate selection to program curriculum and assessment, to the candidates’ capstone doctoral experience. Information on the CSU Ed.D. programs is available on the program web site.
The three-year Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) is an initiative being undertaken by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Learning as part of the broader Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate. It is aimed at fostering redesign and transformation of doctoral education for the advanced preparation of leaders for the nation’s schools and colleges and the institutions that support them. The CPED is engaged in creating a nationally significant framework of quality and relevance for Ed.D. programs as they prepare educational leaders. Additional information about the CPED is available on the Foundation web site.
The independent CSU Ed.D. programs have the following distinguishing features that relate directly to the areas of focus of the CPED:
- Integration of theory and research to address key problems of practice
- Commitment to rigor and excellence in professional preparation
- Laboratories of practice through which best practices are studied
- Signature pedagogies reflecting partnerships with P-12 and community college partners
- Distinctive capstone experiences demonstrating significant outcomes
The CSU CPED will involve faculty and students in exploring central features of Ed.D. programs in Educational Leadership and the interface between the CSU Ed.D. programs and the national Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate. You are invited to visit the CSU CPED main website for more information.
